Location: Share House Men’s Shelter, 1115 W 13th St, Vancouver, WA

Hours: TEMPORARY POSITION ONLY

Pay Range: $18-$23 hour

Job Summary

We are looking for a friendly, outgoing TEMPORARY Kitchen Cooridantor for our Hot Meals Program who loves cooking, serving food, and supporting the community. The Hot Meals program provides daily, free meals to the public 365 days each year (3 meals per day Monday – Friday, and 2 meals on Weekends and Holidays) for people in Clark County struggling with poverty and hunger. The position will assist the Food Service Manager & Food Service Coordinator and focus on various food preparation duties to help with food production, efficient delivery of finished dishes to clients, and regular food safety and cleaning tasks to keep the kitchen running smoothy. This position requires an individual with strong communication and interpersonal skills for engagement with a wide range of stakeholders including co-workers, volunteers, donors, and people who are experiencing houselessness and/or living in poverty.

This position is a part of a team that includes the Food Service Manager, Food Service Coordinator, Food Service Assistants, the Director of Volunteers & Community Resources, the Volunteer & Community Resources Coordinator, and the Volunteer & Nutrition Programs Coordinator.

Summary of Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Hot Meals Program Support

  • Maintain a clean and safe environment by ensuring compliance with health & safety regulations in the kitchen, storeroom, and dining room areas. Properly clean kitchen areas and equipment on a regular basis, including closing after dinner. Report safety concerns or equipment concerns to supervisor immediately.
  • Create meal plans and execute the creation of meals.
  • Follow food safety guidelines to ensure correct serving temperatures, as well as wrapping, date-labeling, and storage of food items.
  • Provide support to the Food Service Manager and Food Service Coordinator to plan, prepare, portion, and serve meals.
  • Maintain organization of food and supply storage areas by own actions or those of volunteers.
  • Perform food preparation duties such as rinsing, peeling, slicing, and measuring ingredients.
  • Serve clients to the Hot Meals Program on schedule and in a fast, efficient, and friendly manner with the support of community volunteers.
  • Treat all clients and meal guests equally, with respect, and in a trauma-informed manner.
  • Communicate closely with Hot Meals staff, Share House shelter staff, and the Director of Volunteer & Community Resources to ensure appropriate coverage for meal service.

Volunteer & Donation Coordination

  • Volunteers are the backbone of the Hot Meals program, and we rely on multiple shifts of volunteers throughout the day to feed our community. Staff members are expected to engage with volunteers and help them feel valued and welcomed.
  • Prepare projects and tasks for scheduled volunteers to help with food preparation and meal service and provide support and supervision throughout their shift.
  • The Hot Meals Program relies on regular and one-time donations of food from our community to operate. Staff members are expected to engage with donors in a friendly manner to explain our current donation policy, accept/decline donations, say thank you, and to provide a receipt if requested.
  • Track, sort, and process food donations on a daily basis as they arrive.

Other

  • This position would require you to adjust schedule occasionally to fill in for other Hot Meals staff during periods of vacation or sick time, sometimes on weekends.
  • Attend all-staff meetings, workshops, trainings, and in-service classes.
  • Attend regular Volunteer Department meetings, Hot Meals Team meetings, and monthly one-on-ones with your supervisor.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma required.
  • Working knowledge of basic food safety and commercial kitchen procedures or ability to learn.
  • A reliable form of transportation required.

Abilities Required

  • Requires the demonstrated ability to perform the job as outlined. Must be reliable and conscientious in carrying out assigned duties.
  • Be a strong communicator and be able to work with a variety of different personality types and positions including staff, community partners and volunteers. 
  • Requires the ability to work as part of a team, including taking direction and following instructions, as well as the ability to make decisions independently when needed.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to track and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and work on your feet for extended periods of time, including squatting, lifting, bending, and performing repetitive tasks/motions.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a Washington State Food Worker Card
  • Possess or be able to obtain CPR and Basic First Aid certification. 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The nature of the work involves working both in the field and in the office. Occasional first aid may involve exposure to blood and other bodily fluids. Proper training will be given. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
